Richmond Food Security Society – Action Team minutes

  1. Agenda- added items 6b. Colt program and 6c.Seniors program
  1. World Food day – debrief-
  • Worked well for all vendors on the same floor
  • Not much foot traffic along the back wall by windows
  • Each group needed full table- reduce the tables to 11 maximum
  • Possible use for the atrium area of the centre
  • Keep food outside to leave more space for vendors
  • Have planning meetings at the library
  • Points brought up from Wendy’s email-would like to have seen more people around at time of opening, suggests exhibitors to be there at specified time and not earlier, performance hall not suitable for films because of low numbers for the films, suggests that RPL should be an equal partner
  • Name labels for vendors and map of exhibitors at entrance and labels on tables
  • Many thanks to the volunteers from Land and food systems 350
  • Suggestions to get more youth involved
  • Urban garden on second floor to be open at event with tours made available
  • More education in schools around World Food Day
  • Add a partnership with the museum- next October display will  be agriculture
  • Films to be shown inside museum

Action: 1. Arzeena to book World Food Day event for October 13, 2012

              2. Present at Table 38 in April/May 2012 to get more youth volunteers, consider including Grade 7 leaders

              3. Talk to Wendy Lim at school district about more information for World Food Day

  1. Youth Film competition- There was four entries and three winners. The youth film competition was in partnership with Cinevolution. The films will be posted on an RFSS YouTube channel. This YouTube channel can also be used to post any related food security films or videos.
  1. Zennie Constatino- An apartment dweller in central Richmond has received a letter and asked to remove her planters where she grows food for herself. She has lived there for 17 years. The letter states that it is attracting pests- racoons, squirrels and rats possible. She explained that there is a lot of garbage around the outside of the building which may be why there are pests. Suggestions for helping was to contact Environmental Health officers, talk to the Province writer- has a column about strata issues in the Sunday edition.

Other suggestions for the long term- there should be more community gardens  in the area, apartment developments should have more green space available.   Advocacy for future developments for deck growing.

Action: Arzeena to contact Environmental Health office

  1. Good Food Box program- the order would be placed through the Surrey Food Bank and would need to be at least 50 orders. We still need to find an outlet for pick up- needs to be on a transit route- suggested locations are St. Albans or Brighouse United. Margaret Hewlett will look into locations.

Action: Arzeena to follow up with Margaret Hewlett on locations

 

  1. Stir it up youth program: Arzeena met with Kay Wong, Jennifer Hill, Kareen Hudson and Linda Robertson.

The youth program is has 25 kitchen programs at Steveston Community  Centre for youth at risk with emotional and social issues. Food security to house the fundraising for program. We collected $275 in donations at World Food Day for the program. Margaret suggested that grants for the program  could be obtained from Literacy Richmond- grants can be applied for at any time of the year.

 

6b.Colt program- Program at Richmond High to help support teen moms received  funding from CKNW to provide homemade organic foods for teen and their kids. Michele Li will be volunteering to help with the program.

 

6c. Seniors program-Keith Yee has started a new seniors food program at the food bank – the Seniors cooking club. It will be running on Saturdays at the Richmond Food Bank. They are hoping to get isolated seniors out, but will welcome any seniors that would like to join.

Action: Erika to pass on information poster to RFSS Group

 

  1. Planning of events: Deneanne invited the RFSS to host a table at the upcoming Fair trade fair at St. Albans Church. It will be on December 3rd from 10am – 2pm. Arzeena also booked a table for the Sharing farm.

 

RFSS Christmas Party – December 8th at Richmond Caring Place with the Stir  it up program to cater the event.

Action: Erika to change date of meeting with Daisy

 

  1. Municipal Elections: Questions for upcoming election candidates

Action: Arzeena will put together questions for the all candidates  meetings on Port issue- i.e.: sale of Gilmour Farm, Garden City lands   action, Agriculture in the city and support for urban agriculture. The           questions will be sent out to the group for revisions.

    Richmond High also has a Grade 10 gardening club that runs out of Paulik Park. They have their own plot garden there and could potentially grow vegetables for the above program,
