It was a great talk! (Sorry)
We do have some video and Bill gave out handouts as well. We'll see if he's ok having it public posted. Have you tried to put up a wanted ad on Craigslist? Depending on the size you are thinking, there are also lots of grass covered yards in Richmond, you could try Richmond Yardshare as well. http://www.richmondfoodsecurity.org/community-gardens/richmond-yardshare/

Great, I just find out about this talk and I'm too late, I'm really interested in leasing a small piece of farmland to get my feet wet in the farming business but I'm having a hard time getting started. I will be a farmer though, one way or the other.

While I completely agree with Harold Steves and Anne Murray's article, we can address farmland and growing food until we're blue in the face, because reality reveals that:
1. Land costs are a barrier to entry for young farmers (those with willing minds and bodies to farm),
2. We simply do not have enough of those willing participants even if we did have all the land available for them.
Question to really ask is "how can we get these barriers out of the way, so that Ports and other food importers do not stand a chance as no one wants to support them?
There is much more to this quandry than we realize, and time is running out...

re:6b.Colt program- Program at Richmond High to help support teen moms received funding from CKNW to provide homemade organic foods for teen and their kids. Michele Li will be volunteering to help with the program.

Richmond High also has a Grade 10 gardening club that runs out of Paulik Park. They have their own plot garden there and could potentially grow vegetables for the above program,

Up to 73 million sharks are killed every year, mainly for their fins (IUCN, 2010). This means that some populations have dropped by 90% and one third of our open ocean sharks face an elevated risk of extinction (IUCN, 2010). Sharks are top predators and maintain the health and balance of our ocean ecosystem. They are mainly being hunted for their fins for shark fin consumption. With their populations plummeting, banning shark fin consumption is the most effective way of protecting these vulnerable, important species.

Because of the high value of their fins (a dorsal fin of a whale shark can go for up to $50,000 alone) and relatively low value of everything else (e.g. their meat, bones and oil), sharks are often targeted just for their fins. Hence, the process of shark finning – where all of a sharks fins are sliced off and the body wasted and dumped back into the oceans – is rampant in the seas. Due to a major lack of resources and enforcement in international seas, the best thing Canadian cities can do to protect sharks is to ban the sale, possession and trade of shark fin products. Shark finning is already prohibited in Canada yet we still import fins that are from at risk species.

If sharks fin consumption goes down, less sharks will be killed because that's the main reason why their populations are being targeted.

Recently, some shocking photos were released on the shark fin trade, see it here in National Geographic -- New Shark-Fin Pictures Reveal Ocean "Strip Mining"
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/10/pictures/111028-shark-conservation-ecology-preservation-biodiversity-animals/

Like Ontario, when one cities take leadership, the others follow. It's about collaborating and working together to find a solution and we need a leader to spark the movement.

Lastly, to our knowledge, there are no freshwater aquaculture shark fisheries in China. We encourage any councillors to get in touch if you have other questions or concerns.
