A Taste of Empire

A Taste of Empire

We are what we eat. But where does it come from? How does it get here? A wacky and fun culinary exploration of global food domination and the conquest for our appetites.

Everything we eat tells a story. While cooking a traditional Filipino dish in real time, writer/performer Jovanni Sy takes us on an entertaining and thought-provoking trip through history as he weaves stories of conquest, imperialistic desires and colonialism through the construction (and deconstruction) of the Rellenong Bangus.

Audiences will immerse themselves in the tantalizing aromas of a kitchen in the Rooftop Garden at the Richmond Cultural Centre; beverages await as our guests are seated, and a tasting plate is served at the conclusion of the piece. A Taste of Empire is truly a feast for the mind and the palate.

Saturday: May 31, 8:00 p.m.
Sunday: June 1, 8:00 p.m.

Presented with the support of the Richmond Food Security Society

  1. Hi,

I’m a journalist for the newspaper The Source in Vancouver. I would write an article about the performance A Taste of Empire. I would know if I could meet Jovanni Sy for an interview. I’m being free this Monday or Tuesday after 5.30pm. It can be easier for me to meet on Tuesday if it’s also possible for Jovanni Sy. I can come to Richmond for the interview of course.
Moreover, I need some pictures and some videos for the website. I’m curious about this work.

I hope to meet you soon
    Best regards
