RFSS Seed Library

The RFSS Seed Library is Available!

Are you looking for seeds to finish planting your garden? Come see if our Seed Library has what you need! Like a regular library, members can “check out” seeds with the hopes that new seeds will saved and returned after the growing season.

We’ll be at the Brighouse branch of the Richmond Public Library on these dates:

Saturday July 5: 10-11:30 am
Monday July 14: 10-11;30 am
Sunday July 26: 1-2:30 pm
Saturday Aug 23: 1-2:30

Why do we have a Seed Library?

The Richmond Community Seed Library is a project started by the Richmond Food Security Society in 2012. A seed library promotes food security by encouraging the community to exchange locally adapted seeds, which thrive in the local growing conditions.

When you visit the Seed Library, you can ‘borrow’ some seeds by selecting them and taking them home to plant. At the end of the season, you collect seeds from your garden’s tastiest and most robust crops to return and share with others, thus replenishing the library’s stock with stronger, locally adapted seeds.

Membership is free and includes access to seeds, classes and other resources. To become a member of the seed library, you just need to sign up for the email list.

Thursday July 10: 7:00-8:30pm
Wednesday August 13: 7:00-8:30

Seed Saving Tips

We recommend that you attend one of the Seed Saving workshops, but if you can’t but would like to save your own seeds, we have some documents you can download with tips about how to save some of the most commonly grown vegetable varieties.

Some seeds are easy to save, but others take a bit more skill. The documents don’t cover every vegetable; we’re hoping to add more soon. If there are any types of seeds not listed here that you’d like help about in the future, just contact us so we can add them to the documents when they are revised. Thanks and happy seed saving!
